The Homestead
About This Spot
Stepping into The Homestead on Folsom Street feels like pausing time in a beloved neighborhood cornerstone. The warm glow of vintage lighting reflects softly off the high Victorian ceilings, inviting you to sink into a moment that’s both quietly familiar and quietly alive. This is a place where conversations ebb and flow at an easy pace, and the everyday bustle of San Francisco pauses just outside its door.
The bar’s personality is rooted in its history—woven through decades of local stories and a steady flow of friendly faces. It’s the kind of spot where the ritual of tossing peanut shells onto the floor isn’t just a quirky tradition but a small act of unspoken belonging. The atmosphere hums with the comfort of people who come both to unwind after a long day and to discover something a bit richer in their evening.
The craft behind the counter reflects this unhurried spirit. Cocktails here — ranging from a subtly smoky Mezcal Penicillin to a refreshingly zesty Hibiscus Ranch Water — balance creativity with classic charm. Every drink feels thoughtfully made, served alongside the easy camaraderie of bartenders who know their regulars as well as their recipes.
Beyond the cocktails, The Homestead carries a quiet generosity; part of your evening here resonates outward, supporting the community in small but meaningful ways. Whether you’re meeting an old friend or meeting new ones under the soft hum of a curated jukebox, the bar offers a genuine slice of San Francisco’s local rhythm—unpretentious, rooted, and distinctly welcoming.

Awesome old bar. Peanuts were a nice touch as well (they ask you to toss them on the floor lol)

Famous with locals. It was recommended and I walked over. The definition of a great local bar. Historic location. Bella the bartender was a joy. She showed me a folder with all the history of the place.

Had so much fun at this bar on a recent trip to San Francisco! Met the owner Austin, and was told the history of this bar. Drinks were awesome, had the Jack Daniels Highball, and found out a portion of my bill went to the San Francisco Food Bank. So I ordered another….:)

Stopped in for a quick drink, ordered one of their signature whiskey honey lemon cocktails and a basket of peanuts. Surprised when they told us to throw the peanut shells on the ground, but we did. The drinks were tasty, the spot was chill, and the bartender with the Giants hat was nice and legit.

Growing up in this great neighborhood, as a kid, this place has always been a bar. It's a great Victorian building with high ceilings. Mood lighting sets a relax mode amongst friends. Great cocktail menu, a lovely jukebox and great looking men and women. It's definitely a starting point before heading elsewhere and a must visit since this establishment has been around since I was a kid.

This is a nice neighborhood bar with a fireplace. Great old fashion cocktails. A wide variety of beer in cans, bottles, and on draft. Bartenders are nice. Don't forget to ask for peanuts and throw the shells on the floor. LOVE THIS PLACE

Fantastic bar. Pure old school San Francisco vibes. We need more of this in the city. Highly recommended for catching up with a friend while drinking a (good!) beer or two
